“Combining Excellence in Law and Technology” Firm Profile
The primary mission of The Law Offices of Scott B. Stahl is to provide patent representation of the highest quality. Combining exceptional legal and technical skills with modest overhead and extensive experience in both large law firm and high-tech corporate environments, The Law Offices of Scott B. Stahl can offer the discriminating client cost-effective and consistently superior representation in the most complex patent matters, with a craftsman's attention to detail.
The firm was founded in 2005, based on a strong conviction that the practice of law is a noble vocation, a profession that is properly ordered to the public interest. Years of practice in law firms, both large and small, eventually led Mr. Stahl to conclude that the traditional solo practice is the form best suited to conserve the virtues of professionalism, and to ensure that clients will receive the high quality representation they deserve.
It is a fundamental precept of the firm that no client is ever too large or too small. Although the firm has large, Fortune 500-size clients, located within and outside the U.S., the solo practice form also provides the agility and flexibility needed to provide effective representation for smaller entities, from start-ups to individuals who tinker in their garages. All benefit from the firm’s uncompromising commitment to professionalism and quality.
Scott Stahl is a U.S. Patent Attorney whose professional practice is based primarily on three pillars: Legal, Technical, and Alternative Dispute Resolution.
preparation and prosecution of patent applications Technical In nearly twenty years of patent practice, Scott has worked in many technical areas, so numerous and varied as to defy compilation of a comprehensive list. To summarize very much very briefly, his experience includes virtually all areas of electronics, literally running the gamut from device level physics, analog and digital electronic circuits, and data processing architectures and their associated software applications, to the hardware and software that drive the world's largest supercomputer systems and global-scale communication systems.
As a solo attorney, Scott is uniquely positioned to serve as a neutral, and has therefore launched an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practice. He is a certified mediator, and can provide mediation and arbitration services, particularly in patent disputes. From his considerable experience in ex parte patentability negotiations with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and in inter partes patent licensing negotiations, he has developed a “deal-maker” perspective that lends itself well to ADR practice.
Scott earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree at Indiana University School of Law, where he was Articles Editor on the Indiana Law Review. Scott’s commitment to excellence is evidenced by his selection for membership in The College of the State Bar of Texas, an honorary society established by the Texas Supreme Court to recognize attorneys who are among the best trained in the state.
Scott holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees, both summa cum laude, in electronics engineering from the University of Louisville. He was a scholarship football player there for five seasons.
Scott has completed all classroom and field study requirements for his certification as a mediator in Texas.
Scott was previously a shareholder in a prominent technology-focused boutique practice in Dallas, a partner in a major Texas law firm, and in-house patent counsel for a high tech Fortune 500 company. While attending law school, Scott worked full-time as a research & development engineer for the U.S. Department of Defense, with emphasis on digital signal processing design.
